How to Pass an FTMO Challenge: My Proven Strategy

After passing 18+ prop firm challenges, I break down the exact risk management rules, psychology, and EA setup that consistently gets traders funded.

Why Most Traders Fail FTMO Challenges

The FTMO challenge has a 10% profit target and a 5%/10% drawdown limit. Simple math — but 80%+ of traders fail. Why?

Not because of strategy. Because of risk management.

The Rules I Follow (Non-Negotiable)

1. Max 0.5% risk per trade

Most failing traders risk 2-5% per trade "to hit the target faster." That's how you blow your daily drawdown on 3 losing trades.

My rule: Never risk more than 0.5% per trade. This means I need 20 consecutive losers to hit my 10% drawdown limit. That doesn't happen with a solid strategy.

2. Max 2 open trades simultaneously

Correlation kills funded accounts. Two EURUSD longs + one GBPUSD long = triple exposure to USD. I never hold more than 2 positions at once.

3. Stop trading after -1.5% daily

If I'm down 1.5% on the day, I close the terminal. No revenge trading. Come back tomorrow fresh.

4. Scale UP slowly, never chase

The target is only 10%. Week 1: aim for 2-3%. Week 2: 2-3% more. By week 3 you're funded with 4% buffer.

The EA Setup That Works

For automated challenges, I use a modified version of my BOSA Gold EA with these parameters:

****mql5 input double RiskPercent = 0.5; // 0.5% per trade input int MaxOpenTrades = 2; // Maximum simultaneous input double DailyLossLimit = 1.5; // Stop at -1.5% daily input bool NewsFilter = true; // Avoid high-impact news ****

The news filter alone saves me from 30% of potential losses.

Psychology: The Hidden Factor

  1. Don't check P&L mid-trade. Set SL/TP and walk away.
  2. Don't increase lots after a loss. Drawdown compounds fast.
  3. Treat the challenge account like it's already funded. Same discipline.
